The Election Commission
of Pakistan (ECP) is a federal agency that is independent, autonomous,
permanently established by the constitution, and tasked with organizing and
overseeing elections for the national parliament, provincial legislatures,
local governments, and the office of president of Pakistan. It is also in
charge of drawing up electoral rolls and delineating constituencies. To ensure
that the election is conducted honestly, justly, fairly, and in compliance with
the law, and that corrupt practices are prevented, the Commission makes the
necessary provisions in accordance with the principles established in the
Pakistani Constitution. In Pakistan's history, the Election Commission has
undergone numerous restructuring and reformations since it was first
established on March 23, 1956.
